Be Bold — What Painting a Wall Taught Me about Going for what I want.

coffee_nook1It’s not such a bad color. I have told myself over the past year.

I think I can live with it…it’s kinda trendy.

And so I hedged. I spent a year trying to convince myself that the interior colors of my “new” house was okay. After all, repainting the thing would run into the thousands.

But deep down inside I knew the truth: the color of the walls was driving me nuts. I’ve had enough color theory classes to know that the serene blue had subtle green undertones, which did not match the golds, navy, and sienna of my furniture. When the sun hit the walls just right, all I could see was–well, office green.

So Saturday, I went to Lowes and came back with black chalkboard paint. After about 2 hours, an entire wall of my “coffee/reading nook” was a deeply satisfying black. No longer did my thrift-store-find sofa clash against the wall in terrible disharmony. Even my husband and daughter bragged on it, a couple of sloppy edges not-with-standing.

We had a great time drawing all over the wall.

Why had I not just gone for that look all along?

Sometimes our lives can be like that. I don’t know about you, but I can be awfully timid at times. When I should be going bold!!!

The Bible says in I Timothy 1:7 — For God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. That reminds me of when Peter stepped out of the boat to follow Jesus, who was walking on the water. Peter was doing fine until he looked down at the big waves dashing about him. Then he started to sink.

I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to give my timidity to Jesus, and now I’m not just talking about painting my literal house.

What about you? Do you have fears holding you back?

  1. It was just the edges that I had trouble cutting. But I did better than I first thought I would. I’m sure it just takes practice. Blue is my favorite color, too. Just not turquoise, which is trending big right now.
